There are three types of painting in the Smoking Room.
The first represents Dutch paintings
of the 17th century, of which the most important is the large still life by Jan Weenix over the
fireplace.
The second represents the 18th and early 19th century passion for collecting art while on the
Grand Tour, and the views of Venice in the style of Canaletto recall such travels by the first
three Earls of Carnarvon.
The third represents the links between the Herbert family at Highclere and their cousins at
Wilton House, links which are also apparent in the portraits in the Dining Room.
