Highclere Castle is not far from Oxford to the north and Winchester to the south, each of which offer fascinating days out for visitors. Oxford can be an excellent town as a base to explore not merely Highclere but visit some unusual historic houses such as Ditchley Park and the old Bank Hotel. The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford is outstanding and of course Oxford is not far from Blenheim Palace.

The charming town of Hungerford with an antique market and high street by the Kennet Canal lies 10 miles west whilst if you continue a further 10 miles west you arrive at  the picturesque town of Marlborough.

Newbury is the local town for Highclere and has a racecourse with several exciting meetings throughout the year.

Stonehenge lies southwest of Highclere Castle is famed for the extraordinary neolithic stone circles. www.stonehenge.co.uk
