Living in a Castle Talk & Tours
Sadly, the government roadmap out of the Covid-19 pandemic requires Highclere Castle to keep its doors closed in early May. As a result, out Living in a Castle event must be postponed for a few days.
If you have tickets for this event between 9th-15th May 2021, we would be delighted to transfer your booking to either 18th, 19th or 20th May 2021 and provide you with something to look forward to as we tentatively make our way out of the pandemic.
“Each year I consider a different theme around Highclere, its landscape, the stories and works of art. In May, I thought it would be interesting and fun to share what life was and is like to live a Castle, whether the talks around the theme of how to decorate a family home which resonates with history, living with a film crew, how we plan and prepare the setting – the gardens and how the castle has welcomed royalty, statesmen and thus entertained over the year” – Lady Carnarvon.
Beginning with an informal talk from either Lady or Lord Carnarvon, our guides will take you on a special guided tour of the main state rooms and galleried bedrooms, following which we are offering a special tour of the Egyptian Exhibition which runs through the cellars, underneath the Castle. The numbers of guests will remain limited and we will continue to offer all of the necessary protocols to keep you safe. The tea rooms are available throughout the day, with a delicious selection of food and drink, and we very much hope you will find some lovely mementoes in the gift shop.
The structure of the day allows you to enjoy the gardens either at your leisure or in the company of a guide. It is a special time of year to enjoy the famous azalea beds in Highclere's gardens which we hope will be covered in colour and scent. They stretch across the Lawns in front of the folly, "Jackdaws Castle". The Azaleas altaclarense which means (Highclere) are now to be found in many gardens on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
