Real Lives and Film Sets Guided Tours

from September 20th 2020 to November 15th 2020

(Dates will cover both weekdays and weekends)

We look forward to offering several tours each week. The number of guests will be limited to offer more space and highlight a bespoke experience.

Lord and Lady Carnarvon are delighted to invite you to step into the real-life location and living film set from Downton Abbey this autumn. Wind your way through the park, along the gravel drive to join us to explore the very familiar State Rooms from the much-loved series and upcoming Film “Downton Abbey”.

During your guided tour you will recognise where so many of your favourite scenes were shot locations, so many memorable lines uttered. Downton Abbey has given many people much enjoyment and a tour of the Real Downton must be the ultimate engagement.

Beginning in the Saloon, the heart of the Castle and a central room where characters from upstairs and downstairs met the tour will share the real history and works of art from Stanhope bedroom, decorated in Real Life for HRH the Prince of Wales and also the bedroom in which  the handsome Turkish Diplomat died of a heart attack. It was also Shirley MacLaine’s bedroom for one episode and Lady Anstruther’s in another.

After the tour through the State Rooms, around the gallery bedrooms, stepping down the Oak Staircase, guests are then invited to descend to the cellars to explore the Egyptian exhibition.

This fascinating Exhibition tells the story of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun and contains antiquities from the earlier tombs in the Valley of the Nobles and Valley of the Queens. The 5th Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter spent some 16 years working out in Egypt before they knocked through a sealed door to find a royal tomb 3,500 years old.

Following this, you will enjoy a seasonal buffet chosen by our Head Chef served in our Coach House Tea Rooms. This will include a selection of finger sandwiches, homemade soup, quiche and delicious mini cakes as well as traditional scones and cakes, served by our own butlering team.

A stroll in the grounds is a must after indulging in the Coach House and please take the opportunity to explore the gardens.
