VE Day Stories from Highclere

Three days before VE Day, on May 5th 1945, a B-17 bomber aircraft crashed into Siddown Hill behind Highclere Castle. All bar one of the young American airmen on board were killed. The story emerged during the course of the research for 'Lady Catherine & The Real Downton Abbey'. With the help of a team, Lady Carnarvon has managed to retrieve some of the remains of that aeroplane.

A much happier story from VE Day, 1945, was a spontaneous celebration through the streets of London. Incognito, thanks to their uniforms, Princess Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, Lord Porchester (the present Earl's late father) and friends left Buckingham Palace to melt into the crowds and join in with the singing, dancing and joyful madness.
